Basic competency education examinations and other materials, state publications, 1952-1984.

This series relates to the standardized testing of students. Included are materials on the basic competency examinations, the educational assessment program, and high school graduation requirements. Basic competency education refers to standards identified as minimum skills to be mastered in reading, language, and mathematics at grades three, six, and nine. Item specifications have been compiled for each competency to be assessed on the Alabama High School Graduation Exam (AHSGE). Included are the minimum standards and competencies, instructional materials, and regulations and accommodations for exceptional children. The Educational Assessment Program was designed to determine the critical education needs of the state. The reports present the results of science achievement at the fourth- and twelfth-grade levels. The brochure about high school graduation requirements lists necessary subject units and explains the Alabama High School Graduation Examination. The series shows the Department's efforts to establish standards in public education.
